Well done year 6!
We have had a very busy week but I am so proud of how hard you have been working and your behaviour throughout.
In English, we have had the chance to write up our final draft of our setting description after peer editing to improve. We have also finished off our core text for the half term (Street Child) and finally found a happy ending for our main character, Jim. Lots of the children enjoyed reading this book and found Jim’s life very interesting – if this was the case, Berlie Doherty has written another book that follows the story of Jim’s two sisters who he is separated from called ‘Far from home’ – you may find this book in your local library if you would like to continue reading from this author!
In maths, we have looked at orders of operations (BIDMAS), multi-step problem solving and reasoning from known facts. The children have done a fantastic job of applying their prior learning to these topics and have worked hard to come to the end of their ‘addition, subtraction, multiplication and division’ topic. As we are now at the end of this block of learning. I will attach some ‘consolidation learning’ packs to this post for additional support at home. Our new topic after half term will be fractions – I will also upload some year 5 consolidation work to prepare for our lessons together. This work is optional; however, I would love to see any work completed!
As you will be aware, we finished up our science topic of ‘electricity’ with a trip to the Science Museum on Wednesday. The children had a fantastic time watching the live science demonstration where we saw chemical reactions take place through ‘elephant toothpaste’, a glow stick the size of a child and fire react to sound. We spent some time in the ‘wonderlab’ where the children were able to experiment with circuits, go down friction slides and look at the effects of static electricity. We finished our excursion with a trip down memory lane. The children looked at ‘life in the home’ and how household items such as toilets, ovens and even TVs have changed throughout the years! The children all seemed to have a wonderful time (other than our walk back to school in the rain). Lots of the children expressed interest in other areas of the museum however we did not have time to visit these exhibits! If you are looking for a trip over the half term, the science museum offers free tickets had lots of opportunities for interactive experiences! (I will attach Science Museum pictures in a seperate upload).
In history this week, we have been looking at Queen Victoria and her impact on society and future British monarchs. We have written and recorded a speech about her life to showcase our knowledge about her.
We have finished off our music topic this half term which was based around the song ‘happy’. We have had opportunities to sing and perform the song on xylophones which was lovely to hear.
Over the half term, please continue to read and use timestable rockstars, a minimum of 5 times over the week. These are both fundamental key skills which need continued development (even on our time off).
This half term, we have had a ‘bookflix’ display where the children were given recommended books to read and have left a review recommending this to someone once they have finished it (see picture below). Next half term there will be a new selection of recommended books so please have a look at these when you come back and leave a review if you have read the book! Remember to also write a book review for a book you have read from the library to be in for a chance to win a £5 voucher to spend at the book fair!
