10.02.23

Miss Bates - 10 Feb 2023

Well done year 6 for being so determined during our last week before half term!

We have spent our week doing SATs papers (sorry year 6!) and I am so proud of how hard you have been working during this time. You have done a fantastic job of applying your problem-solving skills to questions even when we have not covered all of our content yet which is brilliant.

In between our SATs papers, we have concluded our science topic of ‘light’ by investigating how different filters change the colour of a counter by only letting some of our light pass through. We have also been completing activities to help us reflect on ourselves and how we are feeling as this week at school has been ‘children’s mental health week’. I’m really proud of how reflective the children have been and how they have been able to connect as a class.

As with many year 6 classes, maths reasoning and reading comprehension can be quite challenging, I have therefore sent home some work to support with this. I have sent home a SATs maths reasoning paper from 2016 as well as an arithmetic paper from the same year. I will upload a mark scheme to this article so this can be marked at home, you will then be able to see the areas you need to work on based on things you found tricky. Please then have a look at the uploaded documents titled ‘optional homework maths’ as this will be updated with additional documents for you to use at practice at home. I have also sent home a reading comprehension text to try and there are more under the article ‘optional homework reading comprehension’.

Both maths papers and the reading comprehension are due back in on 24.02.23. The arithmetic paper should be completed in 30 minutes, the reasoning paper should be completed in 40 minutes and the reading comprehension should be completed within 20 minutes. This is to stick as close to SATs timings as possible and will therefore only take 1.5 hours in total. I would also love to see any other optional homework you complete at home!

Please do not stress about the result of your paper when you mark it at home, remember we complete these papers to show us where we need to improve further, not to see if we have passed!
As always, please continue your practice on TTRS and with your 5 reads a week (with page numbers included), but most of all, please make sure you get some much-needed rest ready for our next half term at school!
