Miss Bates - 26 Sep 2022
Year 6 have settled back into school extremely well and have already shown off some fantastic pieces of work!
Our core text this half term is 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty. The Children have really enjoyed reading about the main character, Jim, and his life during the Victorian Era.
During English, we have been working on writing a diary entry from the perspective of Jim and how he would be feeling at the start of the book when he is evicted from his home.
During history we have looked at Queen Victoria’s reign, the lives of rich and poor children and types of crimes and punishments during this time. The children have enjoyed being about the relate their knowledge to what is happening in Street Child and the experiences Jim has while being in the work house.
We have been covering place value during maths and have now moved onto looking at our 4 operations (+,-,x,/), with specific focus on common factors this week.
In science, we have been looking at electricity and the children have been able to investigate the brightness of a bulb in a circuit under different circumstances.
The children have done well so far to remember PE is on a Thursday and that they should be reading 5 times a week (only to be signed by an adult).
The children are also given spellings every Friday which they will have a week to learn, with a test taking place on the following Friday. The children will have some opportunities to go over these spellings during the school day but will need to practice these at home as much as possible. A printed copy will be handed out on Friday for the children to take home and the list will be assigned onto Spelling Shed. All children have their Spelling Shed login stuck into the cover of their reading record.
Regular homework will now also be sent home with children on a Friday which they will have a week to complete. The first set of homework was sent out on Friday just gone (23/09) and will be collected this Friday (30/09). The homework will alternate each week between grammar, maths and comprehension questions (following the format a SATs).
Well done year 6 for settling in and always working so hard!
