Week 1 Spring 1 5S

09 Jan 2025

Welcome back and well done Year 5 for a great week.

It has been a strange first week back, but the children have been their usual resilient, happy selves and it has been wonderful to be back together in the new year.

We started our new Maths unit, Multiplication and Division. We have been recapping things such as column method, but also have been introduced to new skills such as using an area model for multiplication. The children egenrally have done well with these, although more practise will be done to build their confidence up.

In Reading, we have been learning about the poem The Jumblies. The children have enjoyed this humourous poem, and have done very well with their comprehension of different parts of it.

For our new English unit, we are completing a writing journey alongside Year 6. We are using the picture book The Wanderer as our focus. Using this book, we are going to write a diary entry, placing ourselves in the position of 'The Wanderer'. I  preparation, we have been recapping our knowledge on apostrophes: when, where and how to use them. We have also been practising writing a range of challenges that our character is facing, and we made a board game out of them!
