Week 2
Learning in Year 1
What a fantastic week of learning this week. We have been learning lots and working really hard.
In Literacy we have been looking at 'The Bog Baby'. The children have been engrossed with the text. It's a book that has lovely illustrations. We started off describing Bog Baby. The children used many appropriate adjectives and turned them into descriptive sentences. Our learning moved forward into describing the 'feelings' of Bog Baby throughout the story, with a focus on a different image. We have been working really hard to start to use 'and' and 'because' in our writing.
I'm absolutely delighted with some of the writing this week. I attach some examples for you to read and enjoy!
In Maths we have been learning about 'positional language' and 'giving directions', so this week was very practical and active. The use of key vocabulary enabled the children to rehearse and use repetition to move different objects around a grid.
Our topic this term is ‘Would the Beatles win X Factor?’ What do parents think? The children listened to some Beatles music and produced a title page to show what they will be learning about. If parents and family members have any interesting Beatles stories or memorabilia, please let me know. We would love to use them during our reflection ‘Talk Partner’ time.
The children have been busy sorting different animals into different animal groups: reptiles, mammals, amphibians in Science. They enjoyed grouping them and had many discussions as to where they could go.
Please sign-up for Parents’ Evening. Many families have already done so. Also, remember to return money and slips for our Christmas Pantomime.
The children will be assessed over the next two weeks for their ‘Reading Benchmarks’. Mrs Nicholls and I are really pleased with the accelerated progress of most of the children’s reading. I urge you to continue with this at home. 15 minutes every evening will make a massive difference over the year.
