Week 5- Our temporary pet called Gary

06 Oct 2016

A big thank you to the parents who attended the maths workshop on Monday, it was lovely being able to share how we teach maths in Year One and what strategies children are taught to learn counting, number and place value.

In literacy this week we have been reading the story "Aaaarrgghh Spider!" We had adopted a real pet spider and we named him Gary. He was in the corner of the classroom on his web but decided to go shopping on Wednesday! He was on the carpet so we helped him outside! We have been writing about how the spider in the story is feeling, describing the spider and we are beginning to write from the viewpoints of other characters in the story. Children's writing is coming along very well. We are focussing on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We are also beginning to learn about the connectives "and" and "because" to extend our sentences.

In maths this week we have learnt about the names and properties of 2D shapes, symmetry and Venn diagrams. We have particularly enjoyed learning about Venn diagrams and sorting shapes and mosters into them!

Please don't forget to put your child's spelling books with their homework to be handed in every Wednesday.

In PE we have been learning about and having lots of fun playing games. This week we learnt the game "top gear" where we had to pretend to be cars in different gears.

For topic we are enjoying learning about the weather. This combines with our Science learning too.

In art we did some leaf and stick arranging to fill an outline which we enjoyed. In RE we have nearly completed our "all about me" booklets.

It's been a fun week of learning!
