Summer Term 1 Week 1

22 Apr 2022

English
This week Year 1 read a new focus story called Miss Molly's School of Manners. They met a character called Algernon who wasn't very good at being poilte so he went to Miss Molly's school to learn how to use manners. After reading the story, the children created a character description of Algernon, learned how to use the suffix -er and wrote their own rules, trying hard to include conjunctions.

Maths
Year 1 have started to learn how to measure using standard and non-standard units. At the beginning of the week, they used cubes to measure and compare lengths. They also began to understand that we may use different units of measure for different items. The children learned how to use a ruler and ensured that they started from zero so that their measurements were accurate.

Science
In Science, the children learned that both animals and humans needed these four things to survive: food, water, air (oxygen) and shelter. They also considered which animals lived inside, outside or both.
