Sunshine and Sunflowers - Week 4- Reception

Mrs Divall, Mrs Degun and Mrs Zaayman - 15 Mar 2022

This week in Reception we are continuing our ongoing project of growing flowers and vegetables.  We are extremely impressed and excited that so many shoots have grown and we are planning to plant them outside next week now that the weather is getting warmer. Our aim is to have a small, beautiful and fuctional garden area in our garden where we can closely observe changes and growth over time, and hopefully eventually harvest some of the vegetables and meet some of the butterflies and bees attacted to the wild flowers we have planted.

We are also closely following the development and growth of our five caterpillars.  We have each thought of names for them, and we have also read an amazing book called Butterfly Bouquet, by Nicola Davis.  This book has completely engrossed us with it's story but also it's scientific information.   We had a practical science lesson where children pretended to be butterflies and flowers.  We used glitter to represent the pollen getting stuck onto the butterflies and we used a milk carton to represent the nectar.  We have learnt about the very important relationship between butterflies and flowers - they need each other!  We are eagerly awaiting the caterpillars reaching the chrysallis phase of their life cycle.

In maths we have been learning about the consolidation of 10.  We have been investigating number bonds to 10 and in some cases, writing the number sentences out too.  We will listen to a very catchy song from the numberblocks called "ten again" later in the week too!   This week for maths practise, visit this website and set the blocks to 10.  Your child will need to identify the numberbond to make 10 to save the whale!  https://www.ictgames.com/saveTheWhale/index.html

Later in the week, we will be completing an investigation about how plants use water.  We will be placing celery into water and food colouring to see what happens.

If your child has recently achieved afternoon tea with Mr Nunn reading reward, watch this space as he will release the next afternoon tea date soon! Please make sure you are reading with your child at least three times a week.

We can't wait for the disco tonight and to see the children's super dance moves!
