Weeks 1 and 2 Year 5PS
11 Sep 2025
Well done for a brilliant start to the year, Year 5!
The children have come back to school with a positive attitude, and have settled back into both new and old routines very well.
We started lots of new units this week. In English, we have begun preparing to write a newspaper report. Firstly, we pretended to be journalists and interviewed each other, focusing on the 5 'w's'. Then, we looked at a great example of a newspaper report (WAGOLL), and the children found lots of different grammatical features within it. We have also recapped some key types of grammar/punctuation which will be vital for our newspaper reports. These have included: inverted commas, the difference between direct and indirect speech, and subordinate clauses.
In Maths, we have begun with our unit on Place Value. This has included looking at numbers up to 1,000,000, as well as finding 10/100/1000 more of less of a number. The children also recapped on Roman Numerals, and did well to remember most of the key ones. The children have shown good resilience so far throughout this topic, and lots have made brilliant progress already with pronouncing numbers and writing them into the correct place value column.
We also began our unit 'Pharaohs', and in History we started learning all about Ancient Egypt. Our lesson this week focused on Tutankhamun's tomb, how it was discovered and what was found in there. The children were very engaged with this lesson, and we were so impressed with the previous knowledge that a lot of them have!
Happy weekend :)
