Well done year 4 for a brilliant week at school!
In maths this week, we have learned how to divide a 2 or 3 digit number by a 1-digit number, using short division method. We will continue to practice this skill but if you would like to complete extra practice at home, a sheet has been sent home (can also be accessed at the bottom of this page if lost) – this is not required homework but just offered for to support at-home-learning.
We have also been learning about correspondence problems in maths along with efficient methods of multiplication. This had brought as to the end of our ‘multiplication and division’ topic, next week, we will be starting a new topic; length and perimeter.
In English this week, we started our learning journey for a new piece of writing we will be completing before half term begins. Our new piece of writing will be a newspaper article. We have worked with peers to make up the news story following different headlines, have also looked at a good example of this style of writing, and have labelled the different features.
In shared reading this week, we have continued our reading of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’. We have been developing our vocabulary skills by choosing adjectives to summarise the chapter, we have also made predictions of what we think we happen next, using evidence from the text to support our answer.
In art this week, we finished our ‘Animal’ art topic by painting our Bankura Horse sculptures. Next week will be the beginning of our DT topic: ‘Functional and Fancy Fabrics’.
In History this week, we were learning about the features of Motte and Bailey Castles and how these would protect the people living there. We then used our cereal boxes to work in pairs to make our own castle, replicating the features we had learned about.
In science, we have been learning about how sound changes the further from the sound source we are. We went outside to measure 2 metre increments until we reached 12 metres. We used a sound decibel reader and recorded the results as we moved further from the source.
This afternoon, the school celebrated National Geographic Day. We immersed ourselves into our given topic ‘Africa’ by listening to traditional African music and learning about the Ndebele culture in Africa. We used to Ndebele style of art to draw African animals. The children used a range of techniques to do this such as replicating patterns and blending oil pastels to create their finished pieces.
