Year 6 Autumn Term Update

Mr. Stephens - 16 Dec 2020

What a strange term it has been!

I'm very pleased that we were able to welcome the children back to school. The staff have worked relentlessly to ensure that as much distancing and cleaning is happening as possible. While we have had some periods of absence, our Year Six children have worked incredibly hard and have been positive role models for the younger children in our school.

English Writing
In English Writing lessons we have been revising the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling rules required to succeed as writers. Using our knowledge and skills we have written several high-quality texts including biographies, non-chronological reports, poetry, short narratives and setting descriptions.

English Reading
Our class text for this term has been 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty. This text explores what life was like for children in Victorian London. We have enjoyed reading the text and have practised our voabulary, retrieval, comparing, inference and summarising skills.

Maths
So far we have covered three significant blocks - Number and Place Value, Four Operations and Fractions.

Science
Our Science work this term has focused on the human circulatory system and electricity. We linked our topics with Maths and have recorded data, expressed it in the form of different types of graphs and interpreted our data. For Science Day we found that shortbread is a very durable biscuit and can survive tens of dunks in a liquid before crumbling away.

History
As our main topic focused on the Victorian era of British history, we studied many different areas related to this time. We compared and contrasted Victorian schooling with modern schooling, considered the merits of The British Empire, researched the brilliant inventions that revolutionised lives and how looked at how fashion changed during the decades of Victoria's reign.

Next half term our topic will focus on a child's experience during World War 1 and World War 2. We will be reading Goodnight Mr. Tom, writing letters, studying how rationing impacted family life, learning why certain areas of Britain were bombed more heavily by the Luftwaffe and building Anderson shelters as part of our Design & Technology lessons.
