Geology testing and categorising rock types

Hi everyone,

This week in topic, we have been learning about the 3 different types of rock - igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Can your child remember any facts about them? I hope so!

We had a lecturer visit us today from City University London (Dr Divall - a civil engineering lecturer). He taught us a little about what a civil engineer does and some geology we needed to know. He introduced us to the terms 'permeable' and 'impermeable.' He challenged us to work in teams to build a dam using only clay and sand. Then he tested and declared a winning group... can you guess which group that was!?

In the afternoon today, we had a rock hunt outside and made rock collections, carefully noting where each rock was created. We then carefully observed and categorised some very special rocks such as chalk, fossilised slate, mineral quartz etc.
