We started a chain reaction in Year 3!

29 Sep 2016

This week in Year 3, we have been having fun with our maths investigations! The children used their knowledge of halving to create a continuous halving chain, until they got down to the number 1. If they landed on an odd number, they had to jump to the next even number then continue halving! They then compared the lengths of their chains and wrote down the number that started the longest and the shortest chain. Some children even thought about why some chains were longer than others.

Amelie came up with the following explanation:

'The largest number chain was 18-9-10-5-6-3-4-2-1 because we had to add even numbers because you couldn't halve the odd numbers. The smallest chain was 16-8-4-2-1 because we could just halve the even numbers without landing on an odd one.'
